Delhi boy Sanjay Suri started off as a model and featured in a number of heavyduty commercials. He got his break in Raj Kaushal’s ‘Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi’ opposite newcomers Rinke Khanna and Dino Morea. Even though Dino was the film’s principal protagonist, Sanjay got a better response from the audience and media alike. The film, however, bombed.
Thereafter, Sanjay did an extended cameo in Vashu Bhagnani’s ‘Tera Jadoo Chal Gayaa’ starring Abhishek Bachchan and Keerthi Reddy. He even played the lead opposite Raveena Tandon in Kalpana Lajmi’s ‘Daman’, which went on to win a National Award (for Raveena). The film and the award, however, were severely criticised.
Sanjay got noticed for his splendid act in Meghna Gulzar’s ‘Filhaal’, in which he played the principal lead opposite Tabu and Sushmita Sen. The film failed at the turnstiles but Sanjay’s career got a boost. Despite the fact that he hails from a non-film family and has no god-father, this hardworking, immensely-liked and humble boy has made it in tinsel-town on his own steam.
Despite being linked to Rinke Khanna, Raveena Tandon and Tabu, Sanjay, 31, broke many a female hearts by suddenly tying the knot with the Delhi-based Ambika Tandon, who happens to be nearly nine years younger than him! Professionally, Sanjay took up a supporting role in Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi’s mammoth ‘Pinjar’ with Urmila Matondkar and Manoj Bajpai. The role which Bikram Saluja rejected fell in Sanjay’s lap, and he even went on to bag a nomination for his part and performance at the Zee Cine Awards, 2004.
Sanjay’s first commercial hit was Sujoy Ghosh’s ‘Jhankaar Beats’ (2003) in which he was paired opposite Juhi Chawla. The film was well received and hyped, and not surprisingly, his performance found favour with the critics’ community. Earlier this year, he also featured in Sanjay Gupta’s ‘Plan’, co-featuring Sanjay Dutt, Bikram Saluja, Dino Morea and Rohit Roy. His recent release was the commercial potboiler, ‘Insaaf – The Justice’, directed by Shrey Shrivastava, and co-starring Dino Morea, Heena and Namrata Shirodkar.
Sanjay’s next release will be Raj Kaushal’s (his first director) ‘Shaadi Ka Ladoo’ in which his co-stars are Ashish ‘Qayamat’ Chowdhary, Divya Dutta and Mandira Bedi.
