"Hi Sanjay,
I have always appreciated your performances in all you films. One quality that I really like in your acting is the way you downplay your characters. (Especially Pinjar), never out of control and always focussed. May you continue to get better roles and hope you shine even brighter. After watching MBN, one thought sure came to my mind - Why hasn't India seen a full fledged movie about male homosexuality? (Other than a half baked side plot in Bombay Boys). Its prevalent in every city and town of India, yet no film-maker has made a single movie about it - the struggles, the social stigma, the fear. Please let me know if you need ideas and plotlines. Thanks Ajaat! "
- Ajatshatru |
Hi! Ajaat,
Thanks for your mail. Am glad you like MBN and my work in Pinjar. I am proud
of both these films.
I wish I could answer your question as even I faced a lot of resistance to produce
MBN with funding and other things as people here really are not interested in
something meaningful and thought provoking. An out and out Gay film will take
time to come out but I hope someone has the courage and the vision.
We dreamt and did it …now someone else should do it too.
Best wishes,
Sanjay.

"
hi Poppin (oops, Sanjay!!!)
That name stays in your mind after your superb, short and sweet performance, in 'dhoop'. What prompted you to do this role and am i correct in saying your a papa's boy?
I heard your proud papa was in the army too!?
God bless jawans like yourself in portraying meaningful and realistic cinema in today's modern world!
Jai matadi !
Wanting to see more of you in roles like poppin!
Love anu :)"
- Anu Gupta |
Hi! Anu,
Thanks for writing. Am glad to know that you saw a small film like ‘Dhoop’ and
remembered Poppin. I loved the story and I thought it had a soul not just a story.
A true incident which makes it even more touching.
No my Dad was not in the Army.
I hope you got to see my last fim “My brother…NIKHIL”.
Best,
Sanjay. - Sanjay Suri |

"
Hi Sanjay,
Congratulations on your wonderful work in MY BROTHER...NIKHIL. It was a wonderful movie, and it is my hopes that the Indian Cinema would move towards real life issues than toying with romance all the time. AIDS/HIV is a huge issue, especially in India, and your efforts to bring it out are commendable.
I wanted to question you on your interest in photography. As I have a keen
interest in photography myself, it would be lovely to see some of the pictures
you have taken? I take it that you get to travel quite a bit and the pictures
ought to be breath-taking. I have been in a city for quite a bit of my life..so
all I have are buildings. It would be interesting to see what someone else can
pull out."

Hi! SJ,
Thankyou for your mail and watching the film. I am glad you enjoyed the film and also happy that you understood the importance to such films in our country right now.
In your mail I couldn’t place where you’re writing from. Yes, photography
is my interest but my brother is the real one who is a pro at it.
All the best to you and maybe once day we exchange our snapshots.
Best wishes,
Sanjay.

"
Dear Sanjay,
It is one of the best movie I have ever watched. Not only it gives pleasure to its viewers, but also it gives an important messege as far as society is concerned. Though the end is bit sad I really really love it.
I wish you all the very best.
Can you remember me. I just had that rare opportunalty of being with you for a photograph during iifa festival 2005.
Thank you for your kindness.
Krishanthi"

"Bravo Sanjay! Well I'm writing from California and haven't seen your movie, My brother Nikhil, yet. Yet I have visited the movie website and gone through your website as well. I beleive that living in conservative India, the decision to do the roles of a HIV positive person and a homosexual person is a courageous gesture from you. From the times I saw your first movie, Pyar mein kabhi kabhi, I Knew you are a serious actor and will be willing to do challenging roles. Well, thanks for proving my convictions right. Also I'd like to applaud u for some wonderful performances in PMKK, and filhaaal.I haven't seen MBN yet , but by seeing the trailor I beleive u must had done a marvellous job. Hope you get an award. Keep up the grand work and choose yo roles carefully to shine. Best of luck! I do have a question though, if this is too personal, let me know : Have you ever had a homosexual relationship? What leads you to identify closely to the plight of the gay community?"
- Raman |
Hi ! Raman,
Thankyou for your mail and watching my movies though you have to see to “My brother..NIKHIL”. Acting and producing this film has been a challenge and I am glad it paid off. Initially people told me that I am committing commercial suicide by playing a Gay man in a mainstream Hindi film , but I wanted this film to be made coz I felt this film is very important for our country in more than one way.
The role and script was very well written to understand the nuances of a homosexual relationship so one did not have to go through any personal experiences to understand the character and the relationship.
I hope you watch my other films too.
Best wishes,
Sanjay.

"
Sanjay,
Awesome film...however, the great tragedy of Indian Cinema is that an over-hyped,
ostentatious farce such as 'Black' will make big money at the B.O., while a delightful,
sensitive and moving film such as 'My Brother Nikhil' sink without a trace. Anyway,
there's no point complaining, rather, I'll just say that we are lucky to get
good films such as yours once in a while.
As far as the movie itself is concerned, I noticed that even though it is set
in the late eighties, the characters look very much 21st century - in the way
they dress up especially. A little more attention to detail would have ensured
that cargo shorts and pastel shades were avoided as they were not the order of
the day in the late 80s.
But what really stood out was the fine performances of the cast - you were superb
as the protagonist. I rate yours as one of the finest perofrmances in recent
years - definitely better than the crap that 'Stars' like SRK and Hritik Roshan
have dished out. Not to mention the nonsense delivered by novices such as Shahid
Kapur who seem to have a perpetual foot-in-mouth syndrome. I just hope that you
will continue making sensible movies. I think it is possible to make sensible
movies and yet make money - just need to have a creative marketing and distribution
strategy. Don't waste your talent, please, in outlandish, over-the-top Bollywood
potbroilers.
Purab was convincing as Nigel. Victor Banerjee revived memories of powerful roles
in movies like 'Kalyug'. He had disappointed me in 'Joggers Park', where I thought
he was reduced to a caricature.
Juhi Chawla, as always, was fun to watch. Lilette Dubey keeps looking younger
with every film. God bless her!
All in all, an immensely enjoyable film."
- Vineet |
Hi ! Vineet,
Thankyou for your mail and the detailed study/understanding of our film. I appreciate
your criticism over the clothing of the 80’s, maybe we thought very niche
as I personally had cargo’s back in 86 from a co. called “Bugle Boy” and
I remembered the Top Gun days of jeans and white T’s. But I shall value
your comments and pass them on to our dress designer.
Films like Black and all have very big backing and names, which makes our job
even more difficult. But like they say “Never say die” and I am sure
actors like me and many others who believe in sensible commercial cinema will
always find support from people like you.
Thanks for your support and good wishes as we need them all :)
I shall also pass on your compliments to the rest of the cast.
Sanjay.
