"Hi Sanjay,
I have a PhD in social geography from York Univeristy, Toronto, Canada. I teach my undergraduate students postcolonail and development geography. I am interested in conducting a raesearch project in India involving contemporary social issues and media representation. I want to know, why you chose to act in a film like my brother nikhil, when mainstream actors like Sharukh Khan are overtly and covertly making fun about homosexuality. "
- Sutama Ghosh |
Dear Dr Ghosh,
Thanks for your mail and I call you a Doctor since you are a PhD :) I really appreciate your Q, but unfortunately I do not have an answer to your question referring to another Actor and his choice of roles and films. I decided to act and produce My brother NIKHIL purely because of the multiple purposes this film attempts to tackle and communicate , eg, HIV/Aids, its Stigma, Homosexuality, Tolerance, Acceptance, etc etc. and all without being preachy. End of the day it’s a film about love and acceptance without making fun of anyone. This film was also the need of the hour; I think it should have been made 15yrs ago. Me and my friend Onir (director of the film) wanted to tell this story and it had to be done at any cost. We are still in the process of recouping our investments but I think the film had a greater objective than just our monies ( which I am sure we will recover someday :) )
Best wishes and hoping to hear from you. Sanjay Suri..

"Do you think we should be making more movies about gay relations in Bollywood mainstream - not a mockery, but a genuine film with serious note like your My Brother...Nikhil?"
- Kris |
Dear Kris,
Thanks for your mail. Yes I do think the Indian audiences would be keen on watching films like that which have been handled sensitively and aesthetically. But finding funding for such films in not an easy task. I am sure and hopeful that more people like us in the creative field can make a difference.
Best wishes Sanjay Suri.

"Hi Mr.Suri.
I'm Summit from Germany. And I really like your movies. I won't say that I'm your big fan and I love you the most, because this would be a lie, but yes, I find you a good actor and respect you. And my respect increased with your movie My brother Nikhil. It was a good movie with a great topic. HIV/Aids movies are in my opinion the most underrated movies, and I found it really good that you done this movie. I've just one question: Why doesn't ever any shooting of you take place in Germany? Or any shows??? In Germany there are no shows and not even shooting of any movies, not from you or any other Bollywood stars! Why? Is there some special reason for that or why is Germany being "kicked out" of Bollywood??? I wish you all the best for your future and your career and hope to see your new movie soon....
Take care, Summit!"

Dear Summit,
Thank you for an honest mail sent by you. I am so glad that you like MBN and appreciated the fact that these movies are the need of the hour especially in South East Asia.
Well, your Q about shooting a film in Germany…..it’s very very expensive to shoot in Germany. I know that people go to Switzerland and Austria, but maybe that’s because of the familiarity and the discounts available to producers from the Governments. I am not aware of any deals which might seem attractive for an Indian film producer to shoot in Germany. Also it should fit in with the Script. I hope you watch more films of mine and stay connected to my site for the latest.
Thanks Sanjay Suri

Dear Aaliya,
Thank you for your mail and watching my films. It feels great when real people out there like your work and encourage you, and your mail has just done that. I am happy to know that you liked my efforts in MBN and also Pinjar. Its been lovely working with Urmilla. We worked together for the first time in Pinjar and now in Bas Ek Pal. She is brilliant in the film. Ofcourse we didn’t share much screen time in Pinjar but in this one, there’s a lot of us :). It will get released in July end. Thanks once again and assuring you of good cinema in the near future.
Love Sanjay Suri.
