"Hi Sanjay,

Hi Sia,
I am glad you like the film so much that it has inspired you to work for the cause. It will be super thing if people like us can do anything for the cause as India is already becoming the Aids capital of the world and its really nothing to be proud of. We just had a satisfying trip to the North East where Aids is growing at a rapid speed.
Hang in there.
Love
Sanjay

"At the outset, please accept my congratulations for a very sensitive film and an underplayed yet stellar performance in 'My Brother...Nikhil'.
Though I commend your courage in helming a project that addressed one of the gravest social concerns plaguing India today, I simply have one query concerning this choice.
Your story is set in the 1980s when victims of Aids were treated as social pariahs. Societal attitudes then were much more ignorant and naive towards the victims than they are today. The latter change owes much to some good work done by varied members of civil society.
But when you chose to set it in those early years, didn't you consider that you may be risking rekindling some of those initial prejudices and drawing attention to them again?
We have moved on fortunately from those times and I believe we should now take it from here.
Not today, will members of the police force clean their entire chowki with Dettol if an HIV+ person steps into it.
That naivety about Aids is not as strong or deep-rooted as it was earlier but it does exist about the other subject raised in your feature film - the presumption that homosexuality breeds some sort of 'uncleanliness' and therefore, possibly Aids.
The 'past' can be used as a subject but when it is distant enough to not harm our 'present' if revisited.
But in a case like Aids, when we are still in a critical, transitional phase - just recently been successful in changing a majority of the primary prejudices - it is a gamble to talk about the 'not so distant' past.
Well yes, when exploring subjects that have seen no change for the better, distant or otherwise, they warrant any publicity or attention from people like you that are in a position to make a difference. For instance, child marriage or as I believe, a new film of 'female infanticide' (previously unexplored in its entirety).
Or talking about old 'skeletons of our wardrobe' like Sati where we have changed thinking and strongly entrenched it in our present society. And hence there is no harm in revisting.
Please do not take this as any criticism of your work because there are very few like you who take their social responsibilities so seriously and use their leverage to drive for social change.
And please don't get disheartened by the length of the email. You can say, that I do this for a living. Don't worry, I'm not an 'industry critic', just a fan!
I would be happy to know your response.
Regards,
Poulomi

Hi Poulomi,
I appreciate your concern and valuable points you have brought out but the ground reality unfortunately is still the same in many ways. It shocks me that even today a person wasn’t given burial rights in kerala due to Aids, a school boy was thrown out of a school in Guwhati, a woman was beaten to death in Gujarat by her inlaws, two people have committed suicide once detected HIV positve…..and all this has happened in the last one month . I think our film is taking the cause and spreading the message to those who still attach a stigma to the disease and not really discouraging the ones who are working in this area.
But thanks for you view points. Love
Sanjay.

"Hi Sanjay,
I loved your 'Jhankaar Beats' and recently I saw 'My brother Nikhil' and you must believe me when I say that after a long time, there has been one good genuine movie in Hindi cinema. I say this because we rarely get to see such real life like characters and situations these days. It is the kind of movie which stays on with you even after the show is over.
I do not know the fate of the film commercially. I fear in most probability it may not do good business. But please do not look at success in terms of money only.
For me this is an immensely successful film because it has manages to stir up the hearts of the few who can understand meaningful cinema and those who are sensitive to human nature and relationships.
I wish to thankyou for providing us with such a beautiful film and would also like you to pass on this compliment to Onirban(if I've got the name right) hoping that you continue working towards making such films.
Thankyou once again
Ajay.

"Hi Sanjay ...
You were excellent in My Brother Nikhil ... I already saw it thrice and am taking my friends and family along as well ... and you know what I am also being publicity machine for the film with sms and emails lolz ...
My question is --"Did you think twice before making the film and do you believe in the issues to take it up in real life?
"
- Vikram Dhiman |
Hi Vikram
Thanks for the support you have given the film. I did not think twice before making the film coz I believed in it and thought it was very an important film, which had to be made. Yes I am involved in spreading the awareness of HIV AIDS in our country.
Love
Sanjay
